Boaters in the market for a new bowrider have an almost infinite number of choices, making buying decisions difficult. So how does one pick a winner Well, many leave that to boating journalists familiar with all the major players. Check out the magazines and you will find a select few builders who continue to reap praise and earn media awards for best product. Chaparral, a leader in this market, is one such winner -- and a consistent one at that. A current hit for Chaparral is its 186 SSi, an eighteen-and-a-half foot, 3,121 lb. boat with an 8' 2" beam -- luxury and sport rolled into one. Few bowriders look nicer on the water. The hull's glimmering two-tone gelcoat comes to life with crisp, sweeping graphics. Inside, the dcor is slightly more subtle, a blend of function and luxury. The 186 SSi incorporates many of the same big-benefit features found on Chaparral's larger models. Huge lockers are built into the boat's dual consoles, an oversized ski locker easily accommodates skis, kneeboards and wakeboards, and two-tier coaming panel storage means gear can be accessed quickly. In the bow you'll find an insulated ice chest under a hinged cushion, as well as a moulded anchor/rode locker with locking cradle. A moulded bi-fold door keeps air from blowing into the cockpit, while the wraparound walk-through windshield does a great job of directing the wind overhead. Those familiar with the 2001 model 186 SSi will notice a few improvements. The hull liner now has a shoebox-fit deck, the CD comes standard with the stereo system, there's a transom-mounted touchpad for both the stereo and trim, and perhaps best of all, Chaparral has introduced spring-loaded bucket seats, similar to those used in cars. At the helm, the woodgrain dashboard highlights the contoured instrument display, with accessory switches located port and starboard of the Dino finger-grip steering wheel. For bracing your feet, the floor liner features a moulded footrest. Options include a hideaway three-step boarding ladder and a carbon-monoxide detector, but the automatic Kidde Fyre Watch System comes standard. A piano-hinged aft bench seat lifts up and pulls out to access the engine compartment. Our test boat was powered by a 220-hp 5.0 L MerCruiser, swinging a 21-inch pitch aluminum propeller. With a full fuel load (roughly 38 gallons), the 186 SSi performed admirably, hitting a top speed of 51.4 mph on GPS at 4,900 rpm. Interestingly, engine rpm data closely matched the boat's mid-range speeds. At 3,000 rpm, the boat runs 30 mph, at 3,500 rpm -- 36 mph, and at 4,000 we clocked 42 mph. Acceleration was impressive. The hull pulls from 20 to 30 mph in 3.9 seconds, 30 to 40 mph in 5.3 seconds and puts them both together (20 to 40 mph) in 7.9. seconds. Its 3.3-second hole shot is very quick, thanks in part to the boat's extended V-Plane bottom that stretches the full length ofthe hull. A minimum planing speed can be maintained at 17.7 mph, but it really planes flat at 19 mph. Regardless, the boat doesn't porpoise at any speed, and can be driven hard without getting flighty when trimmed high. The boat corners very well, and in a lock turn at 50 mph, the boat's speed dropped by just 10 mph. Driving Chaparral's 186 SSi is like opening a bottle of your favourite wine -- predictable. There's a certain comfort factor with it. Like wine, there are more expensive offerings available, but for a reasonable price, the 186 SSi offers exceptional value. Please submit any and ALL offers - your offer may be accepted!
